Police ID suspect wanted in Walmart shooting that injured employee in Delaware Co.

DARBY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WPVI) -- Shoppers at a Delaware County Walmart said Sunday night they hope police quickly capture the man accused of shooting an employee inside the store on Friday.

Police say 21-year-old Armani Tyrell Waite fled after the shooting, and investigators have been searching for him ever since.

Officers swarmed a home Sunday morning on the 5200 block of Gramercy Drive in Upper Darby Township.

Sources confirmed police were searching for Waite, who is wanted by Darby Township police for attempted murder in connection with the shooting inside the Walmart on North MacDade Boulevard.

"It hits home, because there's children. This is where we live, and it's just getting worse," said Courtney Livergood of Norwood, Pennsylvania.

Police said the shooting stemmed from a dispute between Waite and another male customer.

Investigators said Waite pulled out a gun and began firing, hitting a female Walmart employee in the calf.

She was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover. The employee has not been identified.

"I just pray for the family, keep the family in my prayers," said Makai Banister of West Philadelphia.

Sources told Action News that both Waite and the other customer involved in the altercation had guns, and that Waite dropped his weapon in the store before fleeing. Police are still searching for him.

"You don't know what kind of person they're dealing with. But hopefully they find him and this girl that works here, she gets better," Livergood said.

One shopper said he narrowly avoided being at the store during the shooting, explaining that he had planned to visit the Walmart Friday night but decided not to go.

"God works in mysterious ways, believe me. Because we could've been caught up right in the middle of this stuff, innocent bystanders, you know?" said Vaughn Matthews of West Philadelphia.

Neighbors we spoke to on Gramercy Drive said they do not know Waite, but learning that the police activity on their block Sunday morning was connected to the Walmart shooting left them unsettled.

"I mean, it is kind of terrifying. I love it here, always have, always will. But I just had - my son's one, I don't plan on being in Upper Darby for the foreseeable future," said Stephen Gallo of Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania.

Waite's family arrived at the home while Action News were there Sunday afternoon, upset by our presence.

His mother said her son is in the process of working with an attorney to turn himself in to police.
